What is a binding estimate?

A binding estimate is the contract with the total cost of all moving services to be provided for a specific amount of items (or hours for local moves) as per the moving estimate provided. Any additional services that are requested or required on pick up or delivery that are not specified on the binding estmate will result in additional costs.

How is a moving estimate determined?

Your moving consultant will request you to complete a comprehensive moving checklist to account for all furniture pieces to be moved, and the estimated amount of boxes required to relocate all of your belongings. Estimating boxes can be tricky, as many severely understimate the size and amount of total belongings they have until after every last box has been packed and accounted for. Things to consider:

  • Are you going to move everything in your pantry? What about your closets? Do you have a garage? Know what's in it?
  • Are you going to have a yard sale? Or plan to downsize before moving? Let your consultant know what things are going with you, and what is staying behind.
  • Estimates are calculated by a combination of time (for local moves), and square footage. So disassembled furniture will cost less to move, but take longer to pack. Are you going to disassemble your furniture? Or do you want the movers to do it for you?

For these reasons and more, we strongly recommend scheduling an in-house estimate with one of our experienced moving consultants prior to agreeing to a binding estimate for moves of two or more bedrooms. We encourage this for local as well as long-distance residential moves, and require on-site estimates for all commercial relocations.

If something breaks, what is covered with my quote?

Your moving estimate includes a basic valuation of $.60 per pound per article for the protection of your items for no additional charge. This is not insurance, and is best suited for small moves on a budget or low-cost items. For valuable items, we strongly recommend purchasing full-replacement coverage from our partners at MovingInsurance.com for peace of mind. Please ask your moving consultant for additional information when requesting your quote.
